Allen Hazen Water Tower

Building History in Iowa Since 1930

Standing tall as a marker of Des Moines’ growth in the early twentieth century, the Allen Hazen Water Tower was Turner Construction Company’s inaugural project in Iowa. This towering 64-foot structure—boasting a capacity of 2,000,000 gallons—was a pioneering feat in reinforced concrete construction at the time. Situated on the western edge of Des Moines, it played a crucial role as a storage and pressure facility within the Des Moines Water Works Department’s system.

In 2004, the Allen Hazen Water Tower earned its place as a historic monument on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, nestled within the scenic confines of Des Moines’ Tower Park, it stands as a timeless symbol of Turner’s history and an asset for both residents and visitors alike.
